22 March 2018 – ATTACK 20 nm South BAGRADY, West of Lagos Port

On 22nd March, MDAT GOG received a report of an attack at 0900 UTC in position 0601N 00312E (20 nm South BAGRADY, West of Lagos Port).

The report states that pirates onboard one speed boat were able to board and gain control of both fishing vessels. The fishing vessels were then seen sailing out of Badagry towards the waters of Benin. The vessels were released by the pirates close to midday and sailed to Lagos where they were met by the Nigerian Navy. Two crew members were kidnapped.

Vessels within a 100 nautical mile radius should increase their anti-piracy deterrents in line with Best Management Practices 4. This should include increased twenty four hour anti-piracy watch keeping and radar monitoring. Vessel hardening should be checked and where appropriate bolstered.
